How much does owning a dog cost?
The PDSA estimate the average dog costs £15,700 over its lifetime excluding veterinary fees for illness and accidents.
The cost of veterinary fees can be estimated by getting an insurance quote. Be aware the price will be very low (especially for the more unscrupulous companies) for the first year or two because the insurance company would like to entice you to purchase their product. After the first year or two typically the premium will increase or possibly double.
If you opt not to have insurance please make sure you have the insurance benefit amount stashed away (somewhere between £5000 and £10,000) then add the amount you would have paid in premiums into that savings account monthly.
There is no NHS for pets and they do get sick and injured even when they are young so you do need to be prepared to fund veterinary bills that may be hundreds or thousands of pounds. A common injury for a young puppy might be a trip or fall that leads to a broken leg. This might cost you a couple of thousand pounds in treatment.
Your puppy will go home with 4 weeks free insurance so veterinary fees will be covered in those first few weeks.
